Effect of removing pups when mating lactating rats at the post-partum oestrus.

چکیده
Rats ovulate during the 1st or 2nd night following parturition (Hoffman & Schwartz, 1965). Subsequently, oestrus is not usually observed during lactation. After weaning, cycling is resumed and only then can oestrus be discerned (Long & Evans, 1922). The possibility of studying the relation between lactation and fertility is, therefore, conditional on effective mating of the females at the post-partum oestrus.

Bromocriptine-induced implantation during lactation in the rat.
When lactating rats were mated at the post-partum oestrus, treated with a single dose of bromocriptine (2 mg/kg body wt) 7 days later, and killed on Day 11, implantation was induced in 8/24 animals. When the litter was removed at the time of bromocriptine treatment 5/9 rats had implantations compared with 9/10 after litter removal alone.
متن کاملEffect of pheromones on the plasma level of prolactin during pregnancy and lactating periods in female rat
Introduction: Pheromones play a great role in the reproductive and social behavior of animals. The main sources of pheromones are urine and paracrine secretions. Through the neuroendocrine system, prolactin is a safe parameter to measure and compare the effects of pheromones on the sexual, maternal and also lactating behavior. Methods: Female rats were divided into 19 groups (n=8). To measur...
متن کاملOestrus and Ovarian Activity in Lactating Sahiwal-shorthorn Beef Cows in South-eastern Queensland
Oestrus and ovarian activity were studied in a group of crossbred SahiwalShorthorn beef cows over four lactation periods of varying length throughout different seasons of the year. In the first lactation, cows were in poor condition (body weight 303 kg) and the mean interval from calving to first oestrus was 2202 16 days. Five COWS were still anoestrus 18 months after calving and were culled. T...
متن کاملEffect of lactation on the expression of gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone in dorsomedial and paraventricular nuclei of the rat hypothalamus
Introduction: Gonadotropin inhibitory hormone (GnIH) is believed to be an inhibitor of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. The role of GnIH in lactational inhibition of gonadotropin secretion is not well known therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of lactation on expression of GnIH in these nuclei of lactating and non-lactating rats. Methods: Ten po...
متن کاملPlasma cortisol responses to stress in lactating and nonlactating female rhesus macaques.
Lactating female rats without their pups exhibit lower HPA responsiveness to stress than nonlactating females. However, responsiveness to stress is similar when lactating females are tested with their pups and the stressor involves a potential threat to the offspring. This study constitutes the first comparison of stress responsiveness in lactating and nonlactating female nonhuman primates. Sub...
